The CfK Story

The CfK Story

The Intention and The Source!

The Centre for Knowledge (CfK) is a project I created solely to foster motivational and inspirational education throughout human social settings.  The ultimate intention really is to inspire others to commit more to their course in life, as team members in society, through such social settings as family, the workplace, and the community, for example.  How did this thought come around you may wonder?  Well, back in the late 80’s, as a young, recently graduated, and immediately employed geologist, I had this longstanding worry about whether my contributions at the workplace would make any valuable impact.

The Background!

Prior to commencing my studies at university to become a geologist, I spent a year engaged for national service, then called ‘’Tirelo Sechaba’’. It was here where I was taught the importance of coming to work to give value, and that when on occasion your usual workstation does not provide that opportunity, to give value on location, you instead seek out for opportunities in other locations than simply loiter about until it’s time to check-out.  This stuck to my mind, and I truly began to appreciate the need to show-up at work to give value.  In addition, this kind of approach made me feel useful and needed, which in turn generated a sense of being important, and that got me really inspired at work, and I never looked back.

 The Post-Varsity Appointment!

Now, getting back to the moment of my first appointment as a geologist, at the then Department of Geological Survey, I experienced some blocks earlier on.  My first project was somewhere in the
Kalahari Desert, and the conditions were tough, both in terms of undertaking research work on rocks in an area hugely undercover of sand, and as well in terms of hot weather conditions.
That was frustrating enough, but the worst part was when my team complained and sought for shortened field day hours, and sometimes with comments like ‘’this is government work, and you’ll never get to the end of it”, even though they would still demand for overtime or better pay.  But for me it was always like ‘’this is a scientific project, slow to run, but I must get to the end of it to have some results to show’’.

Besides challenges out in the field, there were other people challenges back at headquarters, which dampened the spirit of a young enthusiast seeking to find a grip to launching a great career path.
At that point there was one manager, responsible for authorising procurement of field equipment, who always queried why a young boy like me was needing to purchase several, 200L metal containers, and as well many other camp equipment like hosepipes, felling axes etc. That was really discouraging coming from a manager who I believed knew about the needs of field workers and would be eager to assist for the success of the work we were assigned to undertake.  The 200L metal containers were needed to carry water
and reserve fuel, as the remoteness and vastness of the area made it impractical and inefficient to get to any other place for supplies.

The Lighter Side!

Surely, it wasn’t all challenges I experienced at the Department of Geological Survey, but there was more to appreciate than to loathe about.  There was a great team of managers and supervisors who made possible opportunities for the development and growth of young enthusiasts.  It was here where my development took a two-pronged approach, in the sense of further professional development in geosciences, on one hand, and personal development and growth, on the other hand.

Sometimes in the ‘90’s, following endless expressions of discontent, by the public, regarding the standard and quality of service delivery, as well as the overall level of public service workplace productivity, then considered poor and unsatisfactory, government respondent by introducing several work reform processes.  I remember a couple of these, amongst them Organisation and Methods, Work Improvement Teams, the Performance Management System, Performance Based Reward System, and the Balanced Scorecard.  Surely, with this much transformative work processes, one would have expected a substantial boost in the level of public service productivity levels.  It didn’t really happen, and not because the processes were themselves flawed to any great extent, but, in my view, because of the non-readiness of the stakeholders involved.  It seemed like there was never that much eagerness to learn, master these processes to ensure they truly work, and ultimately yield the results intended.

The Enlightenment!

For me, this was another level of the education system, because it was something new and different from my professional training.  So, whenever a learning opportunity arose, as they commonly did, comprising workshops, short courses etc., I would take advantage and make sure to pick some value points to enhance my development.  I particularly favoured the ones on personal efficiency, effectiveness, and overall self-organisation, as they helped me to get organized around my entire profession, and as well my life in general.  In addition, I developed a habit to share some highlights from such learning interventions with my team at work, just for motivation and inspiration.  It was at this point when I began to strongly believe that motivation and inspiration was the key factor missing to enthuse work-team members, which in turn could yield exceptional levels of productivity.  This in fact was the beginning of the making of CfK, following some training sessions on strategic planning.

I later considered a strategic plan not only suitable for organized workplace processes but equally for personal organisation in the life of any individual.  This is when I developed my own personal strategic plan and transformed my mission statement into a project, the CfK, which allows me to make contributions that are aligned to my purpose and vision.  A personal strategic plan allows for one to create a sense of order, organisation, and meaning in their life.  The latter is the key to a greatly inspired and fulfilling life experience and is the CfK’s ultimate drawcard through its messaging.

The CfK Message!

Since 2008, following registration with the then Registrar of Companies, and later Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA), the CfK has taken its message across society, visiting schools and other learning institutions, workplaces, and public venues.  The message is two-fold:

Firstly, that for one to achieve the greatest level of success and fulfilment in life, across the board i.e., both professionally, socially, and otherwise, it’s imperative to introduce a programme of personal development and self-growth, to nurture the human element.  This serves to empower individuals with critical people skills on self-organisation, self-management, respect for life and others etc., which are evidently missing from most educational programmes, where preference is only given to the development of technical and professional skills for various work practices. Ultimately, most graduates of the national educational system are not able to commit and drive themselves to the optimum, in seeking to influence better in all they do, and then trouble begins.

Secondly, that the learning process must be seen as intended to be a continuous and life-long practice, simply because life continues to evolve, and hence as the wise from the past have observed “change is inevitable”.  It is therefore imperative that every individual continues to learn to upgrade themselves, so they remain valuable to life and taking part in ways that are truly impactful and enhances the quality of life greatly.  The attainment of certificates and professional qualifications ought to be considered only as major milestones leading to the next major phase of critical involvement in personal contributions, at the workplace, utilising knowledge and skills attained from learning institutions.  This next stage after a period of learning i.e., the workplace, is really a great opportunity for one to continue to learn at an even higher, more critical, relevant, and significant level, in terms of contributions to life, as they practice utilizing lessons learned, at learning institutions, to create results needed.

So, the CfK message is one intended to inspire people, at their individual levels, to always seek to commit more to their course in life and go the extra mile.  The choice of personal development was based on the fact that people are individuals first, before they are society, and have different desires, interests, preferences, opinions, outlooks, views etc., and hence it works better to teach them to appreciate that aspect first, and then see it as well in others, so they grow to appreciate, embrace, and respect such differences, which augers well for better human relations.  The basic structure of the CfK messaging approach is one comprising motivation and inspiration, as a starter, to influence and trigger the desire to embrace the learning process, and then personal development, as the main course, to help individuals restructure and reorganize their lives through personal strategic foundations like purpose, mission, and vision, for example, so everyone has something they stand for in life, which can keep driving them ahead, no matter what, something much more than the world of things, and such is what I call Advanced Personal Development.

Ultimately, below is what you get from Advanced Personal Development, and I hope you like it to the extent you’ll give us your support going forward.  You’ll know you’re well advanced in your development when this happens:

i.                    You begin to prioritize self-education on personal development and growth.

ii.                   You finally become self-driven, and you choose to engage your inborn natural abilities to influence outcomes desired.

iii.                 When it comes to matters of your life, you know exactly who you are, naturally, and what you stand for in life.

iv.                 You’ve entered that stage where you know exactly what matters most and is deserving of your time, efforts, and money.

v.                   If a student or work team-member, you’re able to execute your duties or tasks under minimal supervision.

This list is non-exhaustive and there are certainly many more great attributes you’ll begin to sense and display in your daily life.

“Learn to become your own leader, because self-leadership is ever critical since you are the only one who is always there at any given moment of your life, or whenever any situation arise.”

-
