How Education Isn’t Much About Qualifications But About You Being a Living Testimony to Its Value

“Surely, it isn’t peculiar to think that humans have always come up against major life-threatening challenges, since creation, but managed several breakthroughs to get here.  Such, it seems, was made possible through some deliberate acts to learn, understand, and see possibilities for transcending any prevailing, as well imminent, challenges.  For that, humans were able to develop, grow, and undergo major transformational phases in their lifestyles, culminating in what today is considered civilized ways of living.  The latter, i.e. civilization, is testimony to the value of an intentional and organised learning process, such as the educational system.  Humans today still confronts a myriad of daunting challenges, all needing even more intentional and better organised educational systems.   In other words, today’s challenges require educational processes that can yield not only superior grades or pass rates, but also, even more importantly, graduates that are truly proactive, creative, and self-driven, in taking-on prevailing challenges, and effectively so.”

How Education Isn’t Much About Qualifications But About You Being a Living Testimony to Its Value!

"Education is a system of transformation through the learning process to produce individuals that are knowledgeable and pro-active in creating positive conditions of living” - Benson N. Modie

Look Beyond the Reward to The Impact You Can Make

When I started school at the age of five, I did not have any reason of my own for showing up at school, and I just went to school because my parents said it was a good thing to do.  After a shaky start that saw me repeat Standard 7 and re-do the Primary School Leaving Examination, I fortunately began to see light at the end of the tunnel.  I must thank my parents and guardians, and all the teachers, who never gave up on me and continued to assist me to learn and grow whole.  The early stage of learning is always difficult due to a less clear reason to do so, which results in a great number of learners dropping out of the school systems along the way.  The encouragement we often got at that early age was that if we worked hard enough and passed, then we will eventually be rewarded with a better-paying job.  In other words, most young people got conditioned to the thinking that education was just a platform meant to aid one for better job opportunities to earn some good money.     This kind of thinking has over time hugely masked or obscured the true value of education, resulting in many people simply opting out of the learning process to adopt some other short-cut methods to making money.

The Key Is to Aim for Total Education

Today, very few people or students are keen or eager or patient enough to follow appropriate and effective learning ways, to fully develop themselves and become resourceful and productive persons.  Far too many people believe that if you can make good grades (however you do so), and earn a degree, and ultimately graduate with a certificate, then you are educated.  Organisations and companies that seek to employ personnel also rely heavily on these certificates and qualifications.  Unfortunately, such certificates and qualifications tell you very little about the characters, the attitudes, the competencies, people skills etc., of their holders.  Nowadays, anyone can hold a certificate or degree of some sort, but it is rare to find a highly principled, knowledgeable, creative, innovative, proactive, resourceful and productive individual.  The latter is a sign of total education and gives you individuals who are truly educated in the true meaning of the word.  You can employ these individuals at any time or put them in any important social positions, and they will always make a positive impact.

Making Certain to Be a Living Testimony of The Value of Education

Real education means you have learned, you have the knowledge and skill, and you put it to good use, to meet defined needs (before you can demand for money!).  Real education means if you are a manager your organisation fulfils the needs it was created for, because you proactively utilise your learned skills and knowledge to make it function as such.  If you are an employee too, you make use of your knowledge, skills and understanding gained from your learning period to fulfil the objectives of your organisation.  If you are a recruitment officer, your screening exercise will rely more on the competencies of personal productivity than simply the certificates and qualifications.  If you are a student you want to make sure that you commit 100% to your learning programme, i.e. be grounded, attend lessons, pay attention, ask questions to fully understand the subject matter, do assignments, prepare for exams etc. This way you are developing yourself to become the candidate of choice for recruiting officers.

Put ‘Knowledge Is Power’ First

If you aim for knowledge, understanding, and skills development, you will end-up being a well-rounded person who can do well anyway in the world.  But if you continue to simply aim just for the acquisition of certificates and qualifications, and call that education, you have a long way to go.  The downside of this kind of education shows up at the national level in the form of poorly skilled workforces, lack of creativity and innovation by most, projects mismanagement, sub-standard products and facilities etc., all costing your nation dearly.
