How Though Not an Easy Life for Us All There’s a Way
“That life is never an easy
assignment for any of us is perhaps stating the “obvious”, which, as Khalil
Gibran put it, “is that never seen until someone expresses it simply”. No doubt
you and I struggle in many, sometimes seemingly endless, ways to make the most
out of the one topmost priceless opportunity for being. Similarly obvious is the reality that
despite the struggles, life itself does provide the lighter side of
things. In other words, there are
endless opportunities to learn how to view life differently and change your
trying situations of life. As an
example, difficulty may be looked at from another angle as an opportunity to
learn new skills and develop capabilities to find answers, and not be seen as
simply a stress-generating obstacle”
How Though Not an Easy Life for Us All There’s a Way!
“Footprints on
the sands of time are not made by sitting down”
These evergreen words of wisdom above from
yesteryears, are hard to ignore, and you might perhaps have learnt about them from
elders in your community, or from your own mum and dad, or even your mentor or
teacher. They provide insight to the
fact that true living begins with your being proactive by stepping up to
achieve greatness out of your moment of existence and making history. Growing up in the lands area of Botswana, a
place called Mafhungo, I got to witness great men and women put these words into
action, as they toiled across patches of sometimes dry farmland, in an attempt
to grow food for their families. It was
this early in my life when I got to appreciate the value of social support,
which I have now come to understand as the true meaning of love, as defined by
Stephen R. Covey (author: the 7 habits of
highly effective people, 8th Habit etc.) when he says love is a
verb, which means to support. In other
words, love is the support you give to others through your contributions.
The community where I grew-up were not
deterred by a lack of either money or draught power or anything, instead they
gathered whatever they could, got together and spent a day or two ploughing at
one family’s field, and then they would move on to another family, and so on
and so on, until they covered nearly all the families in a particular
place. They did this with much zeal,
commitment, fun, enthusiasm etc……!
And now, today, we seem to have gotten
into an era where many of us would rather complain or blame someone than garner
some mile-high commitment and take initiative to endlessly pursue some
opportunity to make a difference. As the
words above teaches, there’s absolutely nothing to reap without putting in the
effort. Yes, life is not easy, and it is so for all of
us. But why should it be easy? Everyone has the same natural ability to
excel in life, one way or the other. The
only way is to go through the learning stage, which is as important and
critical as any other natural life-saving activity e.g. eating, breathing,
sleeping etc. Needless-to-say, too many
today seem to expect easy life. Far too
many expect things to go their way all the time, despite doing little
themselves to cause such.
Yes, life is not easy, but there is
that only way, which is to commit to the learning process. Students are called students because of the
learning stage they are at during their development. If you want a great life, i.e. make your
footprints on the sands of time, you have got to see yourself as a
student. I would like to close this
post with the following words from Glen A. McQuirk’s Power Quotes:
“If you wish
to reap a crop, you must first cultivate the land, plant the seed, water and
fertilize the plant, protect it, and then finally, undertake the harvest”
The crop you wish to reap of-course is
that quality life you desire to experience during your lifetime. The message is that you will only get that
quality of life if you start to pay attention and commit to your own
developmental needs.
