How Nature Remains the Truthful Teacher for Natural Human Success!
“As a natural species, our survival and success are
governed by the processes of nature. In
other words, it’s how we set ourselves to fit into Earth’s natural ecosystem
that determines how effective we can be to survive and thrive. Understanding the nature of our interactions
with other living things, and as well the natural environment of habitation, is
key to getting us far. As Lao Tzu put
it, ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step’, and that includes
learning and studying the specifics of our interactions with nature. The latter is a free and open university that
is forever providing vital lessons on future preparedness. Once we knew nothing much about earthquakes
and tsunamis etc., until we studied earth’s geological processes, including
plate tectonics, and now we have a better understanding of the causes and how
to better prepare for future occurrences.
Surely, our most critical needs as a species that seek to thrive in the
long term are hugely dependent on how nature unfolds over time and the effects
therefrom. Therefore, it seems wiser to
pay more attention to what nature always teaches us, across the board, so we
get ourselves better organised to do better in the future.”
How Nature Remains the Truthful Teacher for Natural Human Success!
The Reality of a Natural World
When it comes to the
natural world, we are just one amongst an infinite number of natural
occurrences, and there’s always some unimaginable possibilities that nature may
bring into reality, which are beyond our control. Take for example the advent of Covid-19,
which took most by surprise, as we all looked forward to the dawn of a new and
expectedly exciting 2020s decade. The
Covid_19 era, which was not at all the first calamity of such a magnitude, came
around as a wake-up call to teach, or better still, remind us as humanity, lest
we forget, that we live in a diverse natural world, inhabited by a vast array
of other natural creations. Although, as
humans, we may think of ourselves as the dominant form of such creations, our
intermittent battles against a plethora of nature-driven catastrophes are a
clear sign that we are certainly not on top of the world. The recent Covid-19 pandemic served as a reminder
that our priorities at safe-guarding human life are not in the right order.
Besides Covid-19, there are
many other natural acts such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, meteorite falls,
as well as complex weather patterns giving rise to floods, drought, cyclones
etc., and not forgetting other disease pandemics that include hiv/aids,
malaria, tuberculosis etc. All of this
is a clear indication that the natural world is not only revolving around human
life interests, even though we may consider these as obstacles blocking our
advancement. The truth is, this is just
the nature of nature, which we are a part of, and we must learn to live with by
crafting our niche.
Nature Rules but We Can Prepare to
Mitigate
If we can appreciate the
true nature of nature, then the right thing to do, in my view, would be to sort
out our priorities and prefer first to figure out how we can safe-guard life
against other elements of nature, like Covid-19. In other words, if our priority has been more
about, for example, just driving the economy to support our chosen lifestyles
at the expense of ensuring that our boundaries with the other natural creations,
and occurrences, are well understood and fortified, then this needs to urgently
change. As far as diseases and pandemics
are concerned, I believe that Covid-19 came about to alert us, globally, on the
need to shift priority from a seemingly skewed focus on building material
economies of scale, to instead, scale-up our mental capacity in medical, and
other related research, as well as preparedness to protect and save lives from
any future such pandemics.
Human Development and
Effectiveness Ought to Be Ever a Priority
Going forward, one would
really prefer to see much of our economic gains, as humanity, not utilized in
just scaling our materialistic lifestyles, as well as facilitating conflicts
and war fares, but rather better utilized in human development, for
self-improvement and better management, in different aspects of human life. This way, I believe, could in the long run
give us better quality in decision making and choices, across the board i.e. at
the level of individuals, families, communities, politics etc. Ultimately, when we can all reach a level to
appreciate and understand the nature of our natural world, and how we
constantly interact with the other natural creations, then it will be easier to
find best practices through which we can all manage ourselves, as a species,
for effective protection.
Covid-19 Was an Expensive Push in The
Right Direction
The still
vivid outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic at the dawn of the 2020s decade,
notably and ambiguously so, brought-in both bad and good into our human life
experiences. The bad and expensive part of it saw many of us suffer through
loss of lives of our loved ones, some of whom we couldn't travel to pay our
last respects. Equally, and across the board, the pandemic disrupted and eroded
livelihoods and lifestyles, leaving most in grief. The bad though acted as a catalyst
to inspire a notable phase of creativity and innovation, amongst the general
populace, which resulted in many solution-oriented initiatives, including the
development of vaccines within unprecedented time periods. Such has given us,
as humanity, the assurance that going forward we can rely on our human
abilities, to truly manage any situations that come before us. It remains to be seen though whether the many
lessons learnt during the pandemic will be turned into life-long habits to
guard against other likely future disasters. The greater task at hand, for us
as humanity, is to learn from nature as much as is needed, in a way that helps
create solutions to meet our current and imminent needs. What is without doubt
though is the fact that everyone is powerfully gifted, albeit differently, but
certainly in a way that can add value to life.
Heads Up and Learn from Nature!
Just as
nature taught us that day and night will always return, so we can prepare for
future endeavours, the same applies to all other natural acts. Whether it’s about destructive cyclones,
flash floods, drought spells, pandemics etc., nature teaches that there’ll
always be many such occurrences in the future.
So, nature’s lessons aren’t optional.
